publication submit form broken in old Firefox

Joachim 12 years ago updated by Joris Vreeke 12 years ago 4
After a few weeks, I tried again with my testing system (OpenSUSE Linux and Firefox as installed on our DCU researcher's PCs and laptops 4 years ago assuming that they didn't manually update their system beyond the 2-year automatic update period). No reaction to the submit button.

Can you confirm if you are still having this issue?
In Linux distributions like OpenSUSE and Ubuntu, the web browser is updated within the central software updates of the distribution. No updates are available for old versions of the distribution. The user would first have to update the distribution, which usually only works smoothly if each version step is made. Going straight to the newest version will not work. So this is a lot of work for the user and why almost all people don't do it (as I can see from the systems returned by leaving researchers). The pain level has to be very high. I'm currently helping 2 nclt postdocs to update their 6-year-old Linux systems.
Alternatively, the Labjam system could detect that the browser is too old and display a corresponding message, maybe also pointing out cngl systems policy requires all cngl members to keep their software up to date and to contact local systems support staff (in the respective university) or the cngl systems administrator for help.

We will come up with a solution for this ASAP.
Made some changes to the validation of the publication upload form.
Tested in OpenSUSE 11.2 (with KDE 4 desktop env.) running Firefox 3.5.4 in VirtualBox 4.1.8 on Mac OSX Lion.
No problems with uploading allowed file types, nor with adding events.

Yes, the submit button now does something in Firefox 3.6.17. However, as by one of my other bug reports, I cannot finish submitting a publication as the red box (Please provide an existing event, otherwise create a new one using the '+' button on the right" ) appears even though I did exactly as told (using the plus sign to add a new event).
